Re: What Charlie Crist Said Seven Years Ago Today
Dear Senator Rich,
It’s come to my attention that you will be speaking at the West Palm Beach Democratic Club this evening. In the spirit of campaign season, I wanted to share with you that on this day seven years ago (June 11, 2006), Charlie Crist said the following to the Associated Press:
“It’s important to communicate to people not only rhetoric during the course of a campaign, but to match it with a record that proves that your rhetoric is real.”http://jacksonville.com/apnews/stories/061106/D8I67CJG0.shtml
Yet, in a recent interview with WFLX Fox 29 in West Palm Beach, Crist claimed the following:
“This is not a race, if I get in it, that’s about the past.”
While you and I might have disagreements on policy, I think we can both agree that for someone who said one’s record was important seven years ago, it’s curious why he wouldn’t want to make his campaign about the past. A candidate’s record matters a great deal. Credibility is based upon what actions you have taken, not what actions you will take in the future. Your speech tonight is a perfect opportunity to point out some items in Crist’s record versus your consistent championing of liberal ideology.
- On Abortion: In 2005, Crist started calling himself “pro-life,” but when asked, said he does not support overturning Roe vs. Wade. Then, while he was campaigning in 2006, he told a Catholic priest that he would sign a bill banning all abortions in Florida.http://rpof.org/blog/our-blog/this-day-in-crist-ory-642006-where-is-charlie-on-abortion/
- On Jeb Bush: In 2006, Crist applauded former Gov. Jeb Bush’s tax cuts, saying “There can be no doubt that Florida’s economic vitality in recent years in a direct result of the $19 billion Gov. Jeb Bush and the Legislature have returned to hard-working Floridians through tax cuts.” http://rpof.org/blog/our-blog/this-day-in-crist-ory-692006-tax-hater-or-tax-lover/
- On Republicans: Countless times, Crist has dubbed himself “a Reagan Republican.” In his runs for governor of Florida, and U.S. Senate, he stated that he admires the “party of Reagan” and proudly identifies himself as a “Reagan Republican.” http://rpof.org/blog/our-blog/this-day-in-crist-ory-662004-im-a-reagan-republican/
I hope you will get another opportunity to speak this coming Saturday, at the Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. We’ll continue to do all that we can to help you get on stage.
